Jakarta's community calendar reflects a city of many overlapping populations. Betawi cultural performances in Kota Tua sit alongside embassy national days, expat association gatherings, religious festivals and neighbourhood celebrations. The biggest fixed points are Independence Day on 17 August, when the whole city runs traditional lomba games and flag ceremonies, and Jakarta's own anniversary on 22 June. Lunar New Year in Glodok and Cap Go Meh draw large crowds each February. This section also covers charity fundraisers, heritage walks, talks, film screenings and volunteer days. Many community events are free and open to all, though embassy functions may require registration in advance.
